BUILDING A STRONG LOCAL ECONOMY
The City of Gatineau is currently imposing excessive tax burdens on its businesses, particularly with the introduction of a new tax on non-residential parking. This measure, adopted without adequate consultation, has led to municipal tax increases of up to 30-50% for some local businesses, according to the Gatineau Chamber of Commerce. An increase of this magnitude during this period of economic uncertainty puts additional pressure on our companies, as well as on us, the consumers who absorb part of these disguised tax increases. These tax decisions must be reconsidered if we are to support a dynamic local economy and preserve the commercial fabric of our neighbourhoods.
A city's culture is also shaped by its local businesses, expertise, and interactions between entrepreneurs and consumers. Prioritizing taxes and revenue for the benefit of international franchises means encouraging the disappearance of what makes our neighbourhood our home. In Aylmer, these tax policies weigh heavily on small businesses, threatening their viability and local employment. That is why, as your next Independent City Councillor, I will always be an advocate for our local businesses through an approach to taxation that respects taxpayers' ability to pay.
